The Barbara Grau Tenant Advocate Award is presented annually to an individual or organization carrying on Barbara's legacy through remarkable efforts in the field of housing advocacy. Barbara Grau worked tirelessly and passionately to improve affordable housing for low-income families as an LCBH staff attorney and Board member.
Organization Neighborhoods for Equality: Northside (ONE Northside) is a community organization resulting from the merger of Lakeview Action Coalition (LAC) and Organization of the Northeast (ONE). Together, ONE and LAC have a history of nearly 60 years of powerful and effective community organizing. ONE Northside is committed to educating, organizing and empowering tenants to have a voice in the decisions that affect the availability and affordability of safe and decent housing. ONE Northside community housing organizers are vital to assisting tenants to stand up for themselves. They work hand-in-hand with LCBH legal staff to improve run-down buildings and advocate for tenant rights. Currently ONE’s Single Room Occupancy (SRO) committee is working to develop a proactive solution to preserving the SROs in the city. In conjunction with the Chicago For All Coalition, ONE Northside is working diligently to enact a citywide ordinance. This ordinance will increase tenant protections and require developers seeking to identify SROs to address housing for low-income residents.
